Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket

SHARE

An image of a tunisian crochet blanket with a curving rainbow rising from the lower left side to the right side. The background is a sky blue and the edging is white with tunisian bobble stitches to represent clouds. The tunisian crochet blanket is draped on the side of a crib.

I hope you love rainbows and tunisian crochet! The Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket pattern has both!

This tunisian blanket pattern is special, as it was inspired by all the individuals and families that have experienced at least one miscarriage and then their family grew. Many refer to their new baby as a ‘Rainbow baby.” During my day job as a psychologist, I am privileged to learn of and help people process a variety of experiences, including loss and birth. If you or someone you know has this shared experience, I hope that you know that you are loved, you are not alone, and we can grow from our pain.

Additionally, rainbows are often viewed as an omen of good things to come, and represents diversity and inclusivity, an all embracing of love and friendship.

Why a tunisian blanket pattern?

The tunisian simple stitch creates a fabric that has minimal space between stitches and rows that works wonderfully for images and words. The rhythm of making the forward and return pass is so relaxing too!

I find many graphghan charts that are made with single crochet work well for tunisian crochet, and you could use a tunisian color chart for a single crochet project too. This means that there are infinite designs that can be created with some yarn and a tunisian crochet hook. I’ve seen team blankets, portrait blankets, landscape scenes and more.

Have you ever made an edging at the same time?

Tunsian crochet stitches are all worked in the same manner meaning a forward and return pass, so if you know the type of edging you want to add, you can work the edging stitches before the blanket stitches. The Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket features a bobble edging that looks like little clouds. The tunisian crochet bobble stitch is made in a similar fashion to standard bobbles, and I think that they pop out a bit more from being surround by flat stitches.

Tips for making a tunisian blanket pattern

If you’re familiar with tunisian crochet, then making a graphghan is straightforward, but there are a few things I learned when making this blanket.

  • Never turn your work. This is one of the rules of tunisian crochet, unless working tunisian in the round…
  • Check the first loop on the hook. This counts as the first stitch and typically loosens, so pull the yarn a bit after picking up the first loop in the next vertical bar.
  • Use a row tracker, if you have not purchased the ad-free PDF with the color chart. This will save you time and feeling frustrated from not making enough stitches in a color or the row count being off
  • When changing colors in tunisian crochet during the return pass, you’ll switch to the next color when the next loop on the hook is a different color from the first loop on the hook.
  • If you’re a left hand crocheter, it may be easier to work from the color chart for the rainbow and sun to be in the same placement. If you choose the follow the written instructions, your Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket will be a mirror image.

Yay, Yarn!

An image of yarn that is grouped by color for a tunisian blanket. Starting at the top, there are 6 skeins of sky blue yarn, 4 skeins of white yarn, 3 skeins each of yellow, orange and red, and 2 skeins each of green, purple and blue. There is a multicolored tunisian crochet hook with an attached cable laying on top of the yarn for the tunisian blanket.

The yarn for the Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket was provided by WeCrochet through the Independent Designers Program. In going through all of the wonderful yarn choices, I chose Brava Worsted, which comes in 50 solid colors! Brava Worsted is 100% premium acrylic that comes in a put up of 218 yards per 100 grams at just $3.99 a skein. Brava Worsted is a great for so many projects from amigurumi to wraps, sweater and blankets.

Brava Worsted is part of the Brava Family, which includes additional weights of sport and bulky, and other color ways including stripe, speckle, tweed, recycle. If you need just a little bit or a lot, you can get mini packs or Brava 500, which is 500 grams in a single color.

I enjoy working with Brava Worsted! It is a soft acrylic yarn that rarely splits when crocheting, and very few knots within an entire skein. I hope you give Brava Worsted a try, which WeCrochet has made super easy with the option to select your color or an alternative yarn from the pattern page.

Tunisian Crochet Hooks

We can’t talk about making a tunisian blanket or tunisian graphghan without talking about the tunisian crochet hook. We all love crochet hooks, and I hope you fall in love with tunisian crochet hooks too. At first glance, a tunisian crochet hook looks like a straight crochet hook, but if it is an interchangeable tunisian crochet hook, the end will be tapered to fit a cable. You may consider using an afghan hook which can usually be found in a big craft store, but at 12″ or 16″ in length, it is not long enough to accommodate all of the loops.

For the Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket, you’ll want to use a tunisian crochet hook that has a permanently attached cable or an interchangeable tunisian crochet hook. The difference is having a few cables of different lengths that work with all of the tunisian crochet hooks and each hook having it’s own cable and the cable length is the same.

A benefit of the interchangeable set is that it is easier to use for a variety of crochet projects since you can customize the length of the cable, and even extend the cable for really large projects. An interchangeable set is also easier to store.

If you choose to try a hook to make this tunisian crochet blanket that has a permanently attached cable consider this tip I learned from an experienced designer friend, the tunisian hook needs to be at least a third of the width of the project being made. This means that with the cable attached, your tunisian hook needs to be at least 15″ / 38 cm in length. The loops will be really squished and it will work but the fabric bunching may strain your wrist and arm more, so consider choosing a longer cable.

Reading the Brighter Days Tunisian Blanket Pattern and Chart

In the world of crochet color work, the patterns are most often written differently than a standard crochet pattern due to the frequent color changes and that that crochet project is likely made with one stitch. Tunisian and crochet graphghans are great examples of the entire project being made with the tunisian simple stitch or single crochet, which is represented by one square when looking at the associated chart.

For the Brighter Days Tunisian Crochet Blanket, you will find the majority of the instructions below written as the color number followed by a number and times, i.e.(MC) 12 times, (C1) 9, which means that you will make 12 tunisian simple stitches in the main color and then make 9 tunisian simple stitches in color 1. For the forward pass, this means that you will have 12 loops on the hook in the main color followed by 9 loops in color 1.

The first loop on the hook always counts of the first vertical bar for the forward pass, so the beginning of each line of instruction tells you how many more tunisian simple stitches to make. For example Row 7 states the following: (CC) 6 times, (MC) 73 times, (C1) 13 times, (C2) 13 times, (C3) 14 times, (C4) 13 times, (C5) 13 times, (C6) 14 times, (CC) 7 times. RetP. This means that you will insert your hook, yarn over and pull up a loop 6 times in the contrasting color for a total of 7 loops of that color.

If you are reading the instructions for a row that includes the tunisian bobble stitch, it is similar in that the first loop on the hook is not counted in the beginning of the instructions, and the color is not specified if you are using the same color. For example Row 8 states the following: (CC) 2 times, tbs 1 time, 3 times, (MC) 73 times, (C1) 13 times, (C2) 13 times, (C3) 14 times, (C4) 13 times, (C5) 13 times, (C6) 14 times, (CC) 3 times, tbs 1 time, 3 times. RetP. This means that you start the row with the contrasting color with one loop on the hook already (counts as the first tunisian simple stitch), make two tunisian simple stitches, one tunisian bobble stitch and then three tunisian simples stitches before changing to the next color.

If you purchase the ad-free PDF for this tunisian blanket pattern, the color chart is spread over 4 pages for ease of reading. The pages can be taped together to create a larger sheet. The chart is read from the lower right corner to the left, and bottom to top. Each square represents one stitch, and the first box represents the first loop on the hook. The boxes for the edging are present, but do not indicate which stitches are the tunisian bobble stitches, so it may help to mark those squares or referring the written instructions for the first 6 rows that are all edging rows, and then every third row starting with row 8.

NOTES

  • Pattern is written in US terms.
  • Read entire pattern before beginning.
  • The last st is always worked under both bars.
  • The beginning of the instructions is one less than the total number of tss in the first color, i.e.(CC) 12 times means to make 12 tss and the first loop on the hook is in CC, so there are 13 tss total.
  • When you see (CC) 2 times, tbs 1 time, 3 times, this means you will have 3 tss, 1 tbs and 3 tss in that color.
  • The Edging is worked at the same time as the blanket is created.
  • Tdc are only made with tbs for Rows 2, 4, 6, 166, 168 and 170.
  • Tss are made with tbs for all Rows 8-165 for the Edging section of each row.
  • It is helpful to create a bobbin from Color 4 to make the rays of the sun.
  • The color chart included in the ad-free PDF, and is separated in four part for ease of reading and printing..
