Hey Crochet Friends and knitters! I want everyone to befriend gauge for their crochet (and knit) projects. Besides matching crochet gauge, it’s such a helpful step that can provide lots of information, save you time, yarn and frustration!
In talking with many crocheters, they don’t like making gauge swatches because they find it to be a waste of time or difficult to match pattern gauge. When I have the chance to engage someone in a conversation, it is commonly difficult with tensioning the yarn while they crochet, and not knowing what to do to correct their gauge besides changing hook size.
Let me be clear, changing the hook size is usually enough of a correction but there are different steps that can be done to match gauge, if you don’t know how to or are comfortable with the crochet maths to make adjustments.
Anyways, to make gauge a little easier, I came up with the idea of a comparison calculator. There are several gauge calculators online, but none compare the pattern gauge to your gauge.
This means that you can make a gauge swatch with the crochet hook listed in the pattern, input the gauge information from the pattern, and then add your gauge information. The best practice is to use the same measurement of gauge, for example 4″ x 4″ / 10 cm x 10 cm, but this works too if you prefer to list the total stitches, rows, width and length of your gauge swatch.
Just follow the steps below to compare gauge and get tips, if your gauge doesn’t match.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before using the calculator, make sure you have:
- The pattern’s gauge information (stitches and rows per a given width and height)
- Your swatch measurements after blocking, if the pattern says to block (stitches and rows per the same width and height as the pattern gauge)
- A measuring tape, ruler or gauge square
Step 2: Input Your Data
- Enter the Pattern Gauge:
- Input the number of stitches and rows the pattern specifies.
- Enter the width and height that the pattern gauge is measured over (typically 4 inches or 10 cm).
- Enter Your Swatch Gauge:
- Count how many stitches and rows fit within the same measurement as the pattern gauge.
- Input the width and height over which you measured your swatch.
- Click the Compare Gauge button to get your results.
Step 3: Interpret the Results
- If your stitches per inch/cm are higher than the pattern’s, your stitches are too small. Try using a larger crochet hook or loosening your tension.
- If your stitches per inch/cm are lower, your stitches are too large. Try using a smaller crochet hook or tightening your tension.
- If your rows per inch/cm don’t match, adjust your stitch height technique (e.g., pulling loops higher or tightening them).
- If both stitch and row gauge match, you’re ready to begin your project!
Step 4: Adjust and Re-Test
If adjustments are needed:
- Make a new swatch using the recommended changes (hook size or tension adjustments).
- Measure again and repeat the gauge comparison process until your numbers match.
