Free Crochet Hat for Men Pattern

SHARE

An image of a crochet hat made in a tweed yarn in navy blue, green and purple. It was has an inverted triangle shape with all three colors at the front. The majority of the hat is navy blue and the ribbing is green.

I’m excited to share a new crochet hat for men pattern that combines the beautiful crochet lemon peel stitch with color work to create an easy crochet hat that is perfect for men. This pattern is perfect for those who are new to color work crochet and want to try their hand at creating something unique and stylish. The crochet lemon peel stitch adds a beautiful texture to the hat, and the use of different colors creates a striking effect that is sure to turn heads. Whether you’re making this hat for your favorite guy or yourself, we’re confident that you’ll love the end result. Get your crochet hook and yarn ready!

A Lemon Peel Stitch Crochet Hat for Men

Hopefully, you have spent enough time perusing my patterns to know that know I have several designs made in the lemon peel stitch:

It’s a simple crochet stitch to learn that offers texture and versatility. An experienced crocheter may find it boring at times, but the simplicity makes it helpful when you want a crochet project while watching television. To spice up the lemon peel stitch in a crochet hat, I added some color work to keep all levels of crocheters engaged, and chose a design that the fellas would like. Also, there aren’t a lot of stitches that are “masculine.” I would absolutely make something in a shell stitch for a fella, but it may not be as appealing to some, and the lemon peel stitch is a great universal stitch.

By the way, did you know that the lemon peel stitch is also referred to as the griddle stitch or seed stitch, and not to be confused with the suzette stitch. The lemon peel stitch is a repeat of single crochet and double crochet across a row or round, and can be worked over any stitch multiple, but most often made with an even number of stitches. The key to remember is a double crochet is worked into a single crochet, and a single crochet is worked into a double crochet. The suzette stitch is also single and double crochet stitches, but worked into one stitch, then you skip one stitch. This crochet stitch will be worked with an odd multiple.

Crochet Colorwork

Do you prefer color work or colorwork?

Whether you choose separate words or a compound word, crochet in color is always fun! Sometimes it means a lot of ends to weave in later, but color allows one’s creativity to shine.

When referring to crochet color work, there are three main types: tapestry crochet, intarsia crochet and fair isle crochet. Do you know the difference between each?

Tapestry crochet tis typically created with only two colors per row, the yarn is carried along the row, and made in all single crochet. By carrying the yarn, the other color may peak through, and traditional tapestry crochet is uses single crochet all on the back loop. This color work technique creates a reversible fabric.

Intarsia crochet is where there are no limits on creativity. You add the next color from a bobbin when needed rather than carrying the yarn along the row. Tunisian crochet picture graphs and corner to corner are types of intarsia crochet.

Fair isle crochet may also be referred as stranded color work because do not work over the other color, but carry it over to where you need to pick it up. Also fair isle tends to be a specific design element, and creates a one sided fabric.

As there are no limits to creativity with combinations of stitches, I had not seen any color work made in the lemon peel stitch, so the idea of the Champion Crochet Hat for men was born. It was a process to create a color chart that felt masculine, which also influenced choosing the lemon peel stitche. I don’t know if my husband will wear this hat as much as I would like him to, but he was the inspiration for this crochet hat. He works hard each week in his business, believes in doing things the right way, and the kids and I just adore him so much.

I hope that there is a Champion in your life to make a hat for, and if there is not, consider making this crochet hat to donate. Every deserves a handmade gift that is full of positive thoughts and care.

Yarn

Choosing yarn for this crochet hat for men was a challenge! My original idea was making a garment for men, and then turned into a hat… Like I said, my husband was the inspiration for this design, so I had to choose a yarn that I might convince him to wear on the one really cold day we have in Georgia.

I went to my usual yarn dealers, We Crochet, Lion Brand, Mary Maxim and Hobbii to see what I could find. I had specific colors in mind, and even asked the CBC Community to help select colors. Luckily, a fiber friend reminded me to check Knit Picks, where I found THE ONE. Yes, We Crochet and Knit Picks are owned by the same company, but offer some different yarns based on knit and crochet preferences.

I chose Knit Picks Provincial Tweed to make a crochet hat for men, which comes in 13 rich colors from shades of brown to red to greens and blues. The depth of color is AMAZING. Each 100g hank has a put up of 250 yards / 228.6 meters, and costs $12.99. The price is reasonable for a wool blend of 80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool and 20% donegal tweed. As a worsted weight yarn, it is made from two plies that was easy to work with. I did not experience any splitting with a metal tip hook.

I can’t wait to work with this yarn more. *hint hint*
