Learn a new stitch!

The Crossed Extended Double Crochet is a variation of the crossed double crochet. What is a crossed extended double crochet stitch??

It’s literally just two extended crochet stitches that cross each other to create a textured v-shape. This stitch can be found in the Shawl-digan pattern.

In this sample, I used some worsted weight cotton yarn and a size H hook, but any yarn can be used with the recommended or a slightly larger hook. A dense, airy fabric is created with several rows of crossed extended double crochet stitches. This stitch can work well in breaking up solid rows of single crochet, or create an airy, but warm cowl.

Abbreviations

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

edc = extended double crochet

cedc = crossed extended double crochet

dc = double crochet

sk = skip

st = stitch

YO = yarn over

Let’s get started!

1. Chain 23, turn

2. Sc in second ch from hook, sc in each st across (22 sc). Repeat two more times for a total of 3 rows of sc. Turn, ch 3, counts as dc. You’ll be starting where the arrow is pointing (see pic 2 below)

3. YO, insert hook in second st from end, YO, pull up one loop, YO, pull through one loop, three loops on hook (see pic 3) [YO, pull through two loops] twice. Edc made.

4. The second edc will be worked in the first st where the arrow is pointing. (See pic 4)

5. YO, insert hook in skipped st (see pic 4), YO, pull up a loop, YO, 4 loops on hook (see pic 5), pull through one loop, three loops remaining (see pic 6), [YO, pull through two loops] twice. Crossed edc made. (see pic 7)

6. Sk next st, YO, insert hook in next st (see pics 7 – 9), YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through one loop, [YO, pull through two loops] twice.

7. YO, insert hook in skipped stitch (see pic 10),YO,  pull up one loop, YO, pull through one loop (see pic 11), [YO, pull through two loops] twice (see pic 12).

8. Continue to make cedc until the last three stitches. YO, insert hook in second to last st (see pic 13), YO, pull up one loop, YO, pull through one loop, [YO, pull through two loops] twice.

9. YO, insert hook in skipped st (see pic 14), YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through one loop, [YO, pull through two loops] twice (see pic 15).

10. Make a dc in the last st, turn (see pics 15 & 16).

11. Ch 3, YO, insert hook in space between first cedc (see pic 17), YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through one loop, [YO, pull through two loops] twice.

12. YO, insert hook in space between edc of the first cedc (see pic 18), YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through one loop, [YO, pull through two loops] twice.

13. To make the next cedc, insert hook between the next two cedc and complete as usual (see pic 19, black arrow), insert hook between edc of cedc below (see pic 19, white arrow) See the next completed cedc in pic 20.

14. Continue to make cedc until the last cedc of the row below and ch-3, make first edc in space between ch-3 and cedc (see pic 21), make second edc between edc of the last edc of rows below (see pic 22); place dc in top of ch-3. You might need to slide the edc over slightly to find the top ch to insert hook (see pic 23), turn

15. Continue to work cedc across for as many rows as needed in a pattern or desired.
