Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time a crochet crop top, right?? Okay, you’re probably thinking of light weight crochet cardigans or crochet tops with flouncy sleeves rather than a crochet crop top. Or maybe you’re excited for a new crochet along (CAL). Well, how about a combination of things?

March 1st kicks off a brand-new crochet along for the Berry Crop Top! If you love creating stylish, handmade garments and want to crochet alongside a fun and supportive community, then you won’t want to miss this event.

Before you say,”This crochet along isn’t for me (because I don’t wear crop tops),” check it out and the options to customize the length.

I decided to call it a crop crochet top because I have a short torso 😅, and the length technically falls within the cropped range. The aim is for it to fall along the top of your jeans, pants or skirt.

If the label crop top bothers you, you can call it a crochet vest, as it does look like a vest too. No matter the name, the Berry Crop Top or Vest 😉, it can become a trendsetting look for the spring that you’ll keep in regular rotation. It’s full of texture and reversible. Yes, it is reversible! It is also great for layering over a long sleeve for the early days of spring that are still chilly, or when fall and winter return.

What is a Crochet Along (CAL) & Why Join One?

If you’ve never joined a crochet along before, you’re in for a treat! A CAL is a fun, community-driven crochet event where crafters work on the same pattern at the same time, following a set schedule.

Why You’ll Love This CAL:

✅ Motivation & Accountability – No more unfinished projects sitting in your WIP pile! As people, we tend to get more work done (stitching) when in a group. And I’llThe structured timeline helps keep you on track.
✅ Community Support – Connect with crocheters from around the world in the Confidently Crochet with Creations by Courtney Facebook group. Get feedback on color choices, ask questions, and share your progress!
✅ Skill-Building – Perfect for beginner and intermediate crocheters who want to practice garment-making with easy-to-follow written and video instructions.
✅ Creative Inspiration – Choose complimenting colors, or a solid and variegated yarns. Make your crochet top longer or shorter, or even add ribbing to the hem. You’ll love seeing how others make their Berry Crop Top uniquely their own.

Plus, the Berry Crop Top is reversible, so you get two looks in one—which means even more ways to style your finished piece!

Best Yarn for making Crochet Tops for Comfort, Drape & Style

Choosing the right yarn is key to making any crochet top, but especially a well fitting crochet crop top that feels comfortable, drapes beautifully, and holds up well over time. The Berry Crochet Crop Top is designed to be made with worsted weight yarn, but advanced crocheters can experiment with DK weight yarn for a slightly lighter version.

To ensure that your crochet top will be comfortable, look good and last for years of wearing, I strongly recommend choosing one of these fibers: acrylic, acrylic blends, cotton, cotton blends, superwash wools, polyester blends, but not alpaca. Now I LOVE alpaca everything, but it lacks the strength and elasticity like other wool fibers.

Huge shoutout to Furls Crochet for providing the Wander yarn and the crochet hook for this crochet design, and sponsoring the giveaway (it closed February 22, 2025) in this crochet along!

This design will also be featured in the Furls Blog Hop 2025. This is my third year participating, and it’s such a fun time to be able to share my crochet designs with the Furls Family, as I’ve been a Stan (super fan) since 2013. Be sure to check out the other amazing crochet patterns in this years blog hop that have all been made with Wander Yarn.

A picture of 10 skeins of Furls Fiberarts Wander yarn in the colors Breathe, a pinkish beige, and Fawn, a light brownish color similar to natural wool colors, with a matte gold metal crochet hook on a black background. This yarn and hook is for crochet crop top.

Wander Yarn is a super smooth, slightly shiny, worsted weight, 100% acrylic yarn. With 27 color options, you can choose a neutral or vibrant palette from soft pink and yellow to a deep red-orange and hunter green. Each 100 gram skein has a putup of 120 yards or 109 meters, and so reasonably priced at just $5 per skein! Who doesn’t love a beautiful yarn that is reasonably priced??

Now Wander Yarn is just one option of many awesome yarns that can be used. Here are a few suggestions that can also be used for this crochet pattern. Remember to choose a yarn color and fiber content that you’ll enjoy working with over the next several weeks, while also fitting your budget. Remember all yarn is good enough. 😊

Alternative Yarn Options

Here are a few alternative worsted weight yarns that would be perfect for the Berry Crop Top crochet along:

For advanced crocheters looking for a more lightweight, flowy top, DK weight yarn is a great alternative. Just keep in mind that using a thinner yarn may require adjusting the pattern size and stitch count to maintain the intended fit. This means doing a bit of math. If you don’t like crochet maths, but can match gauge with the suggested crochet hook, keep in mind that your clusters will be looser.

Whatever yarn you choose, you’ll end up with a trendy crochet top pattern that’s comfortable, stylish, and uniquely yours!

How to Personalize the Fit & Design of Your Berry Crop Top

One of the best things about making your own crochet crop top is the ability to customize it to fit your unique style and comfort level. Whether you prefer a longer length, different hem style, decorative arm openings, or added sleeves, this pattern gives you plenty of options to make it truly your own.

Adjusting the Length: Crop Top, Tunic, or Full-Length

As stated earlier, a crop top is not everyone’s style, and other’s may have a long torso, so adding length is an easy customization. You just need to know the length from the chest to your waist or hips. If you prefer a tunic length, which typically falls at the widest part of the hips or slightly longer, you may need to adjust your hook to account for the hip circumference, or you can choose a different size that is close to your hip circumference for the starting stitches.

💡 Tip: When adding length, get more yarn! The amounts listed in the Materials section is based upon the lengths provided.

Customizing the Hem & Arm Openings

The Berry Crochet Crop Top looks fantastic without a hem, but you can create a unique look for adding ribbing (the red sample), a scalloped edge, or even a short skirt to create a peplum top. This can be a fun opportunity to flip through any stitch dictionaries to find one that uses 2 colors and has a multiple that will work with an even number.

The arm openings are generously sized for comfort and a straight forward ribbing. If you would like a different look, you can choose a different edging, a ruffle, or create short sleeves or cap sleeves. Have fun and let your creativity shine while keeping in mind that frogging will likely be involved to create something different and uniquely you.

Don’t let your crochet top land in the UFO (unfinished objects) pile!

Crochet Alongs (CALs) are an amazing way to stay inspired and complete a project with the support of a creative community. But like any project, life can get busy, and it’s easy to fall behind or lose motivation. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you stay on track and enjoy the process!

To keep this casual and fun, we’re going to follow a 7-week schedule.

Why 7 weeks? It’s to ensure that everyone making a Berry Crop Top, regardless of size, has time to gather yarn, and work on it in small sections in case life decides to life in a disruptive way.

A graphic with the schedule on the left side for the Berry Crochet Crop Top crochet along, and an image of a Black woman wearing the finished top on the right with her left arm facing, so the front, back and ribbing of the top are showing.

💡 Tip: Set aside 20-30 minutes a day (or a few hours on the weekend) to work on your top. Progress adds up quickly!

👩‍💻 Join the Community for Encouragement

One of the best parts of a crochet along is connecting with fellow makers! Share your progress, ask for advice, and get inspired by others in the Confidently Crochet with Creations by Courtney Facebook group.
✔️ Post updates & progress pictures.
✔️ Ask for help if you get stuck—someone has likely been in the same spot!
✔️ Cheer on fellow crocheters and celebrate their unique versions.

Attend Stitchin’ Time

For the first time ever, Creations by Courtney will be hosting Stitchin’ Time as a part of the crochet along!

If you’re new to the Creations by Courtney Community, Stitchin’ Time was an online hangout through Google Meet so that we can talk and laugh while working on a WIP. These hangouts were 2+ hours because we would lose track of time, and my twin girls would often join in the conversation or use the various filters. LOL

For the purposes of the CAL, Stitchin’ Time will be used to chat, work on your crochet top, and I’ll answer any questions that you may have. Also, it will be a shorter hangout at an hour.

The day and time will be selected based upon a vote by participants. Once a day and time has been selected, this information will be posted. You’ll need to signup for the CAL newsletter or be in the Facebook group in order to receive the link for Stitchin’ Time.

Track your progress

Especially with the Embossed Wedge Stitch, counting rows requires more effort than other crochet stitches, so using a row counter or project planner page can save time and frustration.

Download this Project Planner Page for the CAL

Take pictures of your yarn before you start, the gauge swatch with a ruler or tape measure and after each crochet session. These pictures can be shared in the Facebook community or other social platforms with the hashtags #BerryCropTop #CreationsbyCourtney and #CBCCAL. And they will make a great short video of how YOU transformed some string into an eye-catching garment!

Experiment with color and customizations!

As stated above, this reversible crochet top is a great opportunity to experiment with color combinations, as well as customizing the length, sleeves and hem. Yes, the main point of a CAL is to make the same thing, but you should always show a bit of your personality too.

🎉 Celebrate Your Finish & Show Off Your Work!

Once your Berry Crop Top is complete, it’s time to show it off! Post pictures in the Facebook group, share styling ideas, and wear your new handmade piece with pride.

Materials and Sizing Information

We’ve already discussed several options for yarn and ideas for choosing two colors to make your Berry Crochet Crop Top. Before you dive into the stash, head to a local craft store / yarn shop, or order online, you need to know what size you’re making and how much yarn you need for your size.

When choosing your size, the Berry Crochet Crop Top was designed with negative ease as the Embossed Wedge Stitch is STRETCHY. Although the top has 2″ / 5 cm of negative ease, it will fit quite comfortably and not be tight.

Gauge

If you learn anything from Creations by Courtney, it will be the importance of making and checking your gauge. This is so important when making crochet garments, as you don’t want to spend 40 hours or more stitching just to discover that it won’t fit because it’s too small or way too big.

Read more about the importance of gauge.
