Courtney here with another crochet hat pattern! You get to choose which chunky crochet hat to make first, since there are two styles. Yes, two crochet hat patterns in one!
You may remember the Windin’ Vest from Fall 2022, and if you don’t know it, head over HERE to check out this size-inclusive free crochet garment pattern. It was a fun and quick crochet project made with the lovely WeCrochet Wool of the Andes, and since I had some left in the yarn stash, it only made sense to make a matching crochet accessory.
Crochet hats are a great way to express one’s style and personality while practicing new crochet stitches or techniques. I enjoy figuring out how to work crochet stitches in the round because I’m Team #NoSeaming. LOL The Windin’ Beanie was the first iteration of these chunky crochet hats, and then it was “necessary” to challenge my creativity to create a top down crochet hat with the post stitches on the crown.
I’ll admit that was the original idea for the Windin’ Bucket Hat was going to have a standard crown, but the look was just okay. After some a few rounds of stitching then frogging, I found a way to increase stitches for the crown and create the leaning post stitches. You’re welcome in advance for figuring out the maths (that so many crocheters do not like).
Obviously bucket hats, particularly crochet bucket hats are popular, and a beanie with a ribbing brim is a classic. With these chunky crochet hats, you can create hats for the entire family to be warm and stylish for your holiday family portraits, heading to the mall for gift shopping, or heading to celebrate and participate in winter festivities.
Ways to style a chunky crochet hat
Before we get to the squishy yarn, let’s get ready to explore different outfit ideas that will perfectly complement your chunky crochet hat!
Casual Chic
The chunky crochet hat is perfect for those casual days when you want to look effortlessly chic. Pair your beanie hat with a cozy oversized sweater and a pair of high-waisted jeans. Add a touch of sophistication with ankle boots or sneakers. The chunky texture of the hat will add an element of coziness to your outfit, making it ideal for running errands or grabbing coffee with friends.
For a more laid-back look, try pairing your bucket hat with a denim jacket, a graphic tee, and leggings. Accessorize with statement sneakers or chunky boots. This combination gives off a cool and relaxed vibe, perfect for weekend outings or exploring the city.
Bohemian Vibes
If you’re a fan of bohemian fashion, the chunky crochet hat can effortlessly elevate your look. Pair your beanie hat with a flowy maxi dress and layer it with a long cardigan or a suede fringe vest. Complete the ensemble with ankle boots or sandals, depending on the weather. The combination of the crochet hat’s texture with the whimsical nature of bohemian fashion will create a stunning and free-spirited look.
For a boho-chic twist on the bucket hat, opt for a floral maxi skirt and a loose-fitting blouse. Add some accessories like layered necklaces and bangles to enhance the bohemian flair. Finish off with strappy sandals or wedges for an effortlessly stylish outfit that’s perfect for music festivals or outdoor events.
Edgy and Bold
If you’re looking to make a statement with your chunky crochet hat, embrace an edgy and bold style. For the beanie hat, pair it with a leather jacket, ripped jeans, and a band tee for an effortlessly cool look. Add some combat boots or chunky heels to complete the edgy vibe. The contrast between the softness of the crochet hat and the toughness of the leather jacket will create an eye-catching ensemble.
For an edgy take on the bucket hat, opt for a faux fur coat, black skinny jeans, and ankle boots. This combination exudes confidence and adds a touch of glamour to your outfit. Don’t forget to accessorize with statement earrings or a choker to complete the edgy look.
Preppy Charm
For those who love preppy fashion, the chunky crochet hat can seamlessly blend into your wardrobe. Pair your beanie hat with a classic trench coat, a cable-knit sweater, and tailored trousers. Complete the look with loafers or ballet flats for a polished and sophisticated outfit that’s perfect for both work and play.
For a preppy twist on the bucket hat, pair it with a collared shirt, a pleated skirt, and knee-high socks. Add some loafers or oxfords to complete the preppy charm. This combination strikes the perfect balance between classic elegance and modern trends.
Cozy Winter
Last but not least, let’s embrace the cozy winter vibes with our chunky crochet hats. Pair your beanie hat with a puffer jacket, a chunky knit scarf, and knee-high boots. This ensemble will keep you warm and stylish during chilly winter days.
For the bucket hat, opt for a faux fur coat, a cozy sweater dress, and tights. Finish off with ankle boots or knee-high boots for an effortlessly chic winter look. The texture of the crochet hat will add an extra layer of coziness to your outfit while keeping you fashionable throughout the season.

Yarn
Squishiness is the name of game in selecting yarn to make a chunky crochet hat. Whether you choose an acrylic, plant fiber or animal fiber, choose something soft but sturdy to show clear stitch definition.
For the beanie hat, I chose WeCrochet Wool of the Andes from my stash that was left over from making the Windin’ Vest during Fall 2022. This lovely bulky weight yarn is made from 100% Peruvian Highland Wool in a put up of 137 yards per 100 grams. Make note that this wool yarn is NOT superwash meaning that you have to gently hand wash and dry flat, or it will felt. If you think that a superwash wool that will not felt under agitation is better for you, WeCrochet does offer a superwash version. Wool of the Andes retails for $6.99, whereas the Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky retails for $10.99.
For the bucket hat, I grabbed a skein of Meridian Mill House I purchased during Southern Comfort Fiber Market this August. This was my first purchase with them, and I will be purchasing more, as I love the thick 2 ply twist of the wool yarn. Sadly, I forgot to get their sample card with all of the information, but it is a bulky weight #5 mostly wool that comes in 100 gram hanks. Come in close so I can tell you a little secret…???? Meridian Mill House yarns are SUPER affordable for wool, wool blends , cotton and acrylics that rival the most commonly known brands. Each chunky hank only cost $8.22.
