Terry Ann Hat: Free Crochet Pattern

Terry Ann Hat, a free crochet pattern made with a DK weight yarn.

The Terry Ann Hat is a free crochet hat pattern that was inspired by a friend who spent time wandering through Windy Knitty (Andersonville, Chicago, IL) with me on a summer day. I scored some Berroco Seduce in the clearance basket, which turned into the V-eekender Scarf/ Shawlette!

This is an easy pattern. It’s so easy, I designed this while riding in a tour boat along the Chicago River! Grab your favorite size I/5.5mm hook and some worsted weight yarn to get started!

I used a DK weight yarn for the original hat, but it will work up lovely in a traditional 100% cotton, wool blended yarn, or even a silk blend yarn for extra drape. Be creative with your yarn choice, just remember to check your gauge to ensure a proper fit for an adult.

SPECIAL STITCHES & TECHNIQUES

  • To make a magic circle: make a loop holding yarn tail to the left, pull up a loop through, yarn over and pull through loop to make a ch(s) for beginning st; continue with pattern st working over both strands of loop. Once all stitches are made, pull yarn tail to close center.
  • CSDC: pull up a loop to the height of standard dc, twist yarn around hook (YO made), insert hook in first st, YO, pull up a loop, [YO, pull through 2 loops] twice

Notes:

  1. Hat is started with a magic circle.
  2. Do not turn after rounds, unless indicated within the pattern.
  3. CSDC can be replaced with ch 3.
  4. Ch 1 counts as a stitch throughout the pattern and the total stitch counts, except for the rounds of single crochet.
  5. Sp refers to the space between 2dc groups, between indicated stitches, or the space created by a ch-1.
