Palm Tree Tapestry Bag

SHARE

The Palm Tree Tapestry Bag is a great stash busting crochet pattern. You'll learn how to neatly change colors, and create a double-sided accessory to carry summer all year long.

It’s September, which means fall is coming and pumpkin everything is here. I’ve joined up with several other crochet designers to offer leaf themed crochet designs. I decided to try my hand at a larger tapestry design, and came up with the Palm Tree Tapestry Bag.

The Palm Tree Tapestry Bag is a great stash-busting design to create a realistic tree of greens and brown, or you can do your four complimenting colors. If you need a smaller project to practice carrying multiple colors throughout the project, start with the Coco Earrings .

Since the weather is cooling, and as much as I’m over the melting heat, as soon it’s too cold, I’ll be longing for warmer weather 😆 The Palm Tree Tapestry Bag is one way to carry a piece of summer with you wherever you may go and through any weather.

This tapestry design is different since it’s a picture on both sides of the bag, as many picture tapestry projects repeat smaller pictures or only one side. I have included several options for completing the bottom and the handles to meet your preference. One tester was so creative to use cord for straps. I decided to offer a few options to help the beginner crocheter further develop their skills, and a different technique to help us all avoid seaming.

If you’re familiar with tapestry and other color work designs, many prefer to work from a colored chart rather than reading a pattern. I have created a chart for this awesome bag, which is included in the ad-free PDF. You can grab the pattern from My Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts.

SPECIAL STITCHES & TECHNIQUES

Attach sides as you work

  • First sc: sl st through next st (counts as ch 1), insert hook in next st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops
  • Last sc: insert hook in st, YO, pull up a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook in next st, YO, pull through st and two loops, turn (Start with first sc for next row)

Color Change: with current color, insert hook in next st, YO, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), YO with next color and pull through two loops. Continue with new color.

Alternative Slip Stitch Join: Remove hook from the last stitch, pull other colors towards the inside of the bag, insert hook from front to back in the first stitch of the round and pull the loop through to the front, turn work. (This reduces the appearance of a seam) Pull the other colors up towards along the round, ch 1 to enclose the other colors and start the next round.

NOTES

  • Pattern is written in US terms.
  • Pattern is worked in 3 parts: bag body, handles, bottom of bag
  • Be sure to not twist the foundation chain.
  • Pattern is worked in turned rounds.
  • Tapestry crochet is worked by carrying the other colors along each round and working over those colors. This creates the stiff fabric. Here are additional tips for tapestry crochet.
  • The alternative slip stitch join can be used to reduce the appearance of a seam on the side of the bag.
  • Follow special instructions for the color change.
  • Do not fasten off a color, unless it is noted.
  • Both sides of the bag are identical, so the chart will be followed for each side in the same order. It can help to mark the 50th st with a marker.
  • Alternative instructions are provided within the pattern for the handles and bottom of the bag.
  • A graph is provided at the bottom of the pattern for easy printing.

  1. I just wanted to say keep it up! I really think you will be one of the “new designers” to make it thru the long haul if you keep developing your style. It may seem like you are giving everything away right now, but you are catching some eyes so press on girl! Thanks for your hard work.

    1. THANK YOU SO MUCH, Traci!! I really appreciate such kind words and recognition of the hard work it takes to design!

  2. Hey I was curious on rows 29 and 32 there are some typos and I just can’t quite figure them out. Could you lend a hand?

    1. Row 29 should be 12 sts and 25 sts, and Row 32 should be with D, sc in next 3 sts, with A, sc in next 13 sts, and finish with 7 sc in last sts. The chart within the PDF is very helpful, if there happen to be anymore typos. Thank you for letting me know about the typos.
