You may already know where the Lemon Peel Mittens started… I’ve used this stitch combination in a few designs over the years, and someone asked if mittens would be available. Now they are!

The Lemon Peel stitch is also the seed stitch, and similar to the grit/suzette stitch as all of these involve the use of single and double crochet. They differ in where the stitches are placed.

• lemon peel/seed stitch: *sc in first st, dc in next st, and repeat across
• mixed grit/suzette stitch: *(sc, dc) in same st, sk 1 st, (sc, dc) in next st

One Skein Project

For this pair of medium sized mittens, I used just one skein of Loops & Thread Tweed in Aran. Yep, just one skein. A little bit more is needed for the size large, so this is a great stash-busting project.

Tester feedback said that this was an easy, quick project that was enjoyable to make. They enjoyed the texture created from the lemon peel stitch.

Loops & Thread Impeccable (97% acrylic, 3% other fiber, 190 yds/174 m, 3 oz/85 g) Aran Tweed 1 (1, 2) skeins

Hook US H8 /5.00 mm or size needed for gauge

Scissors

Stitches Used:

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

dc: double crochet

sc2tog: single crochet 2 together 

dc2tog: double crochet 2 together

Fpdc: front post double crochet

Bpdc: back post double crochet

sl st: slip stitch

fdc: foundation double crochet

FO: fasten off

sk: skip

Special Techniques:

How to join Fdc in the round: For final fdc, yarn over and insert hook through foundation chain, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), insert hook through foundation of first st (starting ch-3), yarn over and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook), [yarn over, pull through two loops] twice, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Gauge

7 stitches in pattern = 2 in.; 5 rows in pattern = 2 in.

Finished Measurements: 

Small (Medium, Large): cuff is approx. 2 (3, 3) in. tall x 6.5 (9, 10.25) in. circumference; 8 (8, 10) in. hand length x 8.25 (9.5, 10.75) in circumference at widest part

Additional Notes

• Pattern is written US terms.
• Read the entire pattern before beginning.
• Ch1 DOES NOT COUNT as a stitch.
• Stitch counts for additional sizes are listed in the parentheses.
• Use a row counter to ensure proper fit, as the lemon peel stitch is hard to count.
• Rather than sewing the first and last fdc, follow the instructions under Special Techniques to connect the round. 
• You can leave a long tail when joining yarn to make the thumb to sew any gaps that are created from creating the thumb portion.
