How to make a crochet tie with bows

SHARE

Adeline Necktie, a crochet tie with double bows and long tails for a statement accessory.

If you’re a crocheter who loves to stay ahead of fashion trends, then you’re in for a treat this year. The 2024 fashion scene is all about bows – from elegant neckties to stylish bow ties and charming chokers. And what better way to embrace this trend than by creating your very own crochet tie?

Imagine crafting a sophisticated crochet tie or a dapper crochet bow tie pattern that complements your outfit perfectly. With the rise of DIY fashion, there’s a growing demand for unique pieces that showcase individual style. And with the availability of free crochet tie patterns online, you can easily dive into this creative endeavor.

Progress, Hope and Happiness-along 2024

Hopefully, this is not your first time learning about Progress, Hope and Happiness, that has been hosted by Denise of Voie de Vie for the eight years. She has tirelessly worked in reaching out to designers and independent dyers from around the world.

The indie dyers provide two to four yarn bases and sometimes an exclusive color way for PHH that the designers can choose from. Each designer receives information about the theme of the year, with this year’s theme being Before + After = Now with nods to Paris during the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Besides the amazing collection of brand new crochet and knit patterns, the Ravelry group is opened each summer for the make along. Anyone can join the festivities by choosing at least one pattern to make by the end of the event. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to win prizes of yarn and patterns, while sharing their progress and cheering on the progress of others’ projects.

Why a crochet tie?

Being invited to participate in PHH for the past four years has provided an opportunity to create something that aligns with my design aesthetic while challenging myself. I enjoy reading the prompt from Denise to researching current fashion trends for summer and not limiting myself to what I can design within the parameters of the theme.

This year’s fashion trends include bows of all sizes, mixes of femininity and edginess and everything 90s. Think wide leg jeans, oversized flannel shirts, well worn and possibly torn t-shirts, satin slip dresses, and chokers. A crochet bow that can be worn as a choker felt like the perfect piece to capture fashion trends and bringing it to the fiber world.

Of course crochet hair bows have been made plenty of times, so I chose to use those bows in a different way. The different way of wearing bows as an adult is to wear it like a necktie. Rather than a traditional crochet tie, the Adeline Necktie is a fashion forward, statement making piece.

Also these two “oversized” bows remind me of the bow hats I made for my twin daughters to wear as newborns. My husband found it ridiculously large for their small bodies, but bows on babies is the CUTEST.

The pattern below features instructions to make two different sized bows in the round (why seam any more than we have to, amiright??), two width options for the bow tails, and two options for the fit around the neck. In case you are not a fan of chokers, you can make a shaped piece that allows the bow to hang lower along the front of an outfit in a necklace style.

Ways to Style a Crochet Tie

  1. Statement Choker: Wear the oversized crochet fashion bow as a bold statement choker by tying it snugly around your neck. Let the long ties cascade down the front for a dramatic and eye-catching look.
  2. Layered Necklace: Pair the crochet bow with a beaded necklace to create a layered effect. Allow the oversized bow to sit at the base of your neck while the additional necklace adds depth and texture to your ensemble.
  3. Elegance: Style the crochet bow with the Genevieve Bolero, a sleeveless top, satin skirt and block heel sandals for an effortlessly chic look.
  4. Bohemian Twist: Embrace a bohemian vibe by incorporating the oversized crochet bow into a loose, flowy outfit. Wear it as a headband or wrap it around your wrist for a whimsical and free-spirited look.
  5. Hair Accessory: Transform the crochet fashion bow into a chic hair accessory by tying it around a ponytail or bun. Let the long ties flow down your hair for a playful and feminine touch that elevates your hairstyle.

Yarn

Yarn is an integral part of fiber arts, and collaborating with designers and indie dyers from around the world is an amazing opportunity that to Progress, Hope and Happiness make along.

I decided to submit my design proposal to A Hundred Ravens, as it was an absolute pleasure to use her Nafanua yarn for the Georgia Summer Top. This year she had an amazing range of yarns, and I chose Lustre, which is the big sister to Nafanua, as a scrumptious blend of silk and superwash merino. Specifically, Lustre is 50% silk and 50% superwash merino in a DK weight (#3) with a put up of 231 yards or 211 meters per 100 grams.

The superwash merino offers softness and the silk offers smoothness that you won’t mind agains the skin, even when wearing it as a choker. Oh, can’t forget to mention the slight sheen from the silk. Maybe add some beads to your crochet tie for a bolder eye-catching statement accessory.
