Choosing the Perfect Yarn

Now that you’re ready to embark on this exciting journey of crochet and fashion, it’s essential to choose the perfect yarn for your glamorous crochet handbag. Just as a painter carefully selects their brush and palette, the yarn you choose will play a crucial role in bringing your vision to life.

When it comes to selecting yarn for your handbag, consider factors such as the weight, texture, and color. The weight of the yarn will determine the overall drape and feel of your finished piece. I received this yarn, BzyPeach Tencel, as a gift, and it is a light DK weight. A worsted weight yarn will work well for this crochet purse too, as it will be stiffer and hold its shape better, if you use the same hook size. Choosing a thicker yarn will result in a different size crochet purse and impact the total yardage required.

Texture is another aspect to consider when choosing yarn. A smooth yarn is a must for this crochet purse to easily show off the geometric pattern. If a textured yarn is chosen the lines will be muddied and not look as neat, which takes away from the elegance of this unique crochet purse.

Of course, color is a key decision to creating a crochet handbag that exudes elegance and style. Look for yarns that offer rich shades and contrast between the chosen colors, allowing you to achieve the glamorous look you desire. Either your favorite color or a color that matches your wardrobe should be considered for the main color.

If you want to choose BzyPeach Tencel, it comes in a 246 yard / 225 meter hank per 100 grams for $30. If you’re not familiar with tencel, it’s a cellulose based fiber made from wood pulp, can be combined with many other fibers, and is sustainable. That means it’s soft, silky and good for the planet!

Creating a Striking Geometric Pattern

Heads will turn and people will ask you about your Shuri Crochet Purse thanks to its striking geometric pattern. As avid crocheters, we can spot a handmade bag from 20 feet away, but this crochet handbag will catch the eye of many. Before you worry about how complicated this crochet project will be, take a deep breath. ????‍????

This crochet purse is easier than it seems because you will be doing an intriguing crochet color work in the form of tapestry crochet. We could go down the rabbit hole on crochet color work, but I’ll save that for another post.

Specifically, this geometric pattern was inspired by a tote bag I saw years ago. It was eye catching and sophisticated for a large tote. To make this pattern really stand out, the color change is the secret. You will change to the next color with the last yarn over and pull through of each single crochet. There will be a few places where the color shows through, and that is a part of the uniqueness of crochet. It is worth taking your time at the color change to “lock in” the dropped color and not pull too tight to maintain your gauge.

Below you will find written instructions for the Shuri Crochet Purse, and a small color chart that indicates the repeated pattern. A full chart of every row and stitch is available with the ad-free PDF and row trackers next to each line of instruction. The ad-free PDF can be purchased from any Creations by Courtney pattern shop.

Putting it all together

Now that you have your stunning geometric pattern in place, it’s time to take your handbag look like a handbag! But only after blocking. Yes, you NEED to block this, especially if your tension changed from crocheting during the day vs crocheting in the evening vs crocheting after work.

For added sophistication and on trend style, a chain purse strap was chosen, but you can make one with your favorite method (a single crochet spiral or lucet are my go to).

When I thought about the shape of the purse, I could have simply stated to seam each end, attach the d-rings, a snap and the strap to be done. In true Creations by Courtney style, it had to be a little different. A triangle piece makes the side, which creates a wider opening for accessing items. It’s very similar to the hard shell clutches one can buy in store.

Attaching the d-rings will take a little concentration, as you start by crocheting around the d-ring and then attach to the crochet purse in one row. If you need help when you get to that step, just let me know. I opted for this method so that it would not interfere with opening the purse, and prevent misshaping when worn.

Adding the studs is the easiest step of putting it all together. Just fold over the top and see where it lands to place the studs. If you prefer longer loops, definitely change it to suit your preference. And if you cannot access studs, you can use coordinating buttons or snaps. If you choose a snap, consider attaching the snap to a small piece of fabric or craft felt, and then attach the fabric or felt to the purse. This prevents the snap from misshaping the crochet purse when it is being opened.

I opted not to add a lining because I love seeing the pattern on the inside too, but you may want to add one to strengthen the structure of your Shuri Purse.

  • Pattern is written in US terms.
  • Read entire pattern before beginning.
  • The Shuri Crochet Purse is made in 5 parts: Body, Blocking, Sides, Attach D-rings, and Closure.
  • Each color is carried along the row.
  • It helps to hold the non-working color towards the WS of the fabric, while working over it with the current color.
  • Change color: pick up the next color to YO and pull through 2 loops on the last sc of the current color.
  • Use the squares next to each line of instruction to track your progress.
  • Each square in the chart represents one single crochet. The red lines represent the repeat.
  • Refer to Rows 4-31 for the repeat and easier printing.
  • Block the Body to final measurements before proceeding to make and attach the Sides.

  1. This purse is so elegant. I’ve been wanting to try to crochet a purse for a while now. I think I’m going to give this one a go! Is it better to add liners on purses? Or no?

    1. Crochet purses are great for practicing techniques. I would definitely add a liner to a bag like this to help hold it’s shape and protect the yarn from what may be carried inside.

  2. This bag is too cute, I’ve been searching for a bag to make for a certain garment I have and this might be the one. I have been walking around with this tan and black cording I wanted to use.

    1. Yes, make this bag!! It is worth the time and patience for a unique and elegant bag. I have to see the complete outfit once you’ve made a Shuri Purse.
