How to make an Easy Crochet Blanket Square

SHARE

If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly crochet blanket square that’s fast, fun, and just the right amount of fancy — I’ve got you. 🙌

The Berries and Cream Crochet Blanket Square is an easy crochet blanket square that’s perfect for adding a pop of texture and color to your next project. Whether you’re making one for the Moogly CAL 2025 or using it as a stash-buster, this pattern is the perfect mix of simple stitches and eye-catching design.

If you’re new to Creations by Courtney, easy patterns will have a little extra pizzaz from color or texture, and intermediate crochet patterns will use color, shaping, texture and more to hopefully sharpen your skills. The Berries and Cream square uses color to jazz up the easy “shell” pattern.

Wait, why is it a “shell” pattern you may be asking?

Well the traditional shell in crochet is a group of double crochet stitches made in a single stitch, whereas in this crochet pattern, it’s a group of single, half double and double crochet stitches to create a shell like shape that leans.

Have fun creating unique color combinations with making this easy crochet blanket square. Shown on the left is a version by MooglyBlog in black with 4 different colors, and the right shows a version by Creations by Courtney in white and berry.

What Makes the Berries and Cream Crochet Blanket Square Special

Let’s talk about what makes this sweet little square stand out — because yes, it’s a looker, but there’s more to it than that. 😉

The Berries and Cream Blanket Square was designed to bring playful texture and visual contrast together in a way that’s beginner-friendly but still keeps you engaged. The alternating stitch combo of single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet gives it that perfect blend of structure and softness — kind of like your favorite dessert: layered, colorful, and just the right amount of indulgent.

And the color changes? I couldn’t keep it super simple by changing color each row or every two rows… Instead, we’re going to change color after each stitch combo — which means no long, repetitive stretches of the same shade. It’s a rhythm that feels satisfying to crochet and gives you those little “yay, I did that!” wins with every row. 🙌

What I love most is that the texture looks way more advanced than it actually is. So whether you’re new-ish to crochet or just want something that works up fast and looks impressive, this square has your name written all over it.

What You’ll Need

Before we dive into the stitches or choosing colors, let’s make sure you’ve got everything prepped and ready. One of the best things about this square? It’s perfect for stash busting! You need just under 90 yards or 80 meters of worsted weight yarn TOTAL. If you’ve been making each crochet blanket square in the Moogly CAL, then you’ll use the same Size J (6.00mm) crochet hook.

It will help to have the usual suspects, I mean tools for finishing your crochet square — yarn needle for tackling the ends, scissors, and a tape measure or ruler to check your gauge and square size before completing the edging.

And a quick note about gauge: if you tend to crochet tightly, you may want to go up a hook size or loosen your tension a bit. The goal is a flexible square with just enough drape for comfort and warmth— not a stiff coaster or so drapey it’s like a wet noodle. 😉

Now that you know what weight yarn and hook size to use, let’s talk color — because that’s where this square really shines.

How to Choose Yarn Colors That Pop in a Crochet Blanket Square

An image of yarn in various colors laid in a straight horizontal line showing that there are numerous options for creating an easy crochet blanket square

Choosing the right color combo can totally change the vibe of your crochet square. Want something classic? Try cream and navy. Feeling playful? Think bubblegum pink and mint green. The possibilities are endless — and honestly, half the fun.

If picking colors ever feels overwhelming, don’t worry — here are 7 simple tips to help you land on a combo you’ll love (and that’ll make your stitches shine).

  1. Go for contrast
Pair a light and a dark yarn to really show off the texture. It helps each group of stitches stand out, especially in something like this alternating cluster pattern.
  2. Use a neutral + a pop
Neutrals like cream, grey, or beige paired with a juicy color (hello, berry!) is always a good look.
  3. Pull from your wardrobe and home decor
Grab your favorite clothing or vase to match your yarn to the colors that already work for you.
  4. Think about mood
Cool tones (like blues and greens) feel calming. Warm tones (like reds and oranges) give cozy energy. Use color to set the vibe of your project.
  5. Swatch it out
Seriously — crochet just a row or two to see if you like it as much as when you first pick up the skeins. Don’t forget to consider your variegated and striping yarns.
  6. Use a color palette tool
Canva’s Color Palette Generator is my go to in quickly and easily creating a palette. I also will take pictures of the yarn together to see how it looks on a screen compared to natural and artificial lighting. Pinterest is also a goldmine for real-world color inspo and color palettes.
  7. Embrace stash diving
Got a shelf full of leftovers? If you have enough in one color and small amounts in various coordinating colors, consider changing the second color each row for a fun and interesting crochet blanket square.

If you’re going with the original look, I used Brava Worsted in White and Red Heart Soft in Berry — a crisp and rich combo that’s giving berries and cream in the best possible way.

NOTES

  • Pattern is written in US terms.
  • Read entire pattern before beginning.
  • You will change color after making each group of (sc, hdc, 2 dc) and carry the color along the row. Try not to pull the color not being used, as it will bunch up the stitches and change the gauge. It may help to gently pull before changing the color in the last YO to ensure even tension.
