X-capade Crochet Poncho: Premium Crochet Pattern

SHARE

X-capade Poncho, a crochet pattern using worsted weight weight. It'll become your favorite poncho to wear no matter the weather.

The X-capade Crochet Poncho is the second pattern in the X-capade collection, and my first published crochet poncho design. This crochet poncho features the x-stitch, similar to the X-capable Cardigan, and made seamlessly.

It’s designed to be a one size fits most with completed measurements of 40 inches wide by 57 inches long without the fringe. It’s a straight-forward design that can be adjusted to be narrower or wider, shorter or longer, which will require a different amount of yarn.

There are instructions for styling the crochet poncho three different ways! Why wear a gorgeous garment just one way? Switch up the look by simply adding a belt, or tack/baste the sides to create a tunic.

If you’re new to using foundation stitches within a crochet pattern, and not just for the first row, I would recommend getting “5 Uses for Crochet Foundation Stitches” if you need more clarification than the picture tutorial within the PDF.

Yarn

For the original X-capade Poncho, I used Baby Bee Hushabye Solid in toy elephant, which is a beautiful shade of gray. I enjoyed working with this yarn because it’s an  acrylic and cotton blend, which is one of my favorite yarn blends. This type of fiber blend tends to be soft and sturdy that can be used for a variety of projects that will last for years to come. Sadly, Baby Bee  Hushabye Solid has been discontinued, but as a worsted weight yarn, that means that there are lots of options to choose from in using a worsted weight yarn that you enjoy most. As always, you want to make a gauge swatch in substituting yarn to ensure that your project comes out as expected. A few yarn options are listed below.

Size Adjustments

This crochet poncho is super easy to style, and can be just as easy to make once you get going with the x-stitch. Although it’s designed as a one size that can fit anyone, you may want to make the poncho wider or narrower. This can be easily done by making fewer rows before the neck opening, and then completing the  same number of rows for the second half. To make the crochet poncho wider, complete more rows before the neck opening and then complete the same number of rows for the second half. Remember to purchase extra yarn, if you decide to make your X-capable Poncho wider. For more detail on adjusting crochet patterns for the perfect fit, consider purchasing “A Guide to Creating Crochet Garments that Fit.”

Notes

  • Pattern is written in US terms.
  • Read the entire pattern before beginning.
  • The fdc of the second half for the neck opening can be replaced with the same number of chains as listed in pattern below. Use stitch markers to mark where to start and end chain. Attach yarn with a slip knot, make chain, skip the listed amount of stitches, and then slip stitch where the second marker is placed. Be mindful to chain looser in order to work stitched into each chain for row 1 of the Second Half.
  • The neck opening can be adjusted by adding or subtracting 2 stitches at a time, and skipping the same number of stitches before continuing the first row of the second half.
  • St in pattern refers to stitch and chain within the pattern.
  • Pattern can be lengthened by adding a multiple of 5 chains. Make sure that the beginning foundation stitches are a multiple of 5+1
  • Poncho width can be shortened or widened by making fewer or more rows before edging.

    1. Thank you Loretta! Variegated yarns are lots of fun. I enjoy discovering a random pool of a darker shade in variegated yarns to make a project truly unique.
