Mo’Rockin’ Sunrise Ponchette, Free Crochet Pattern

SHARE

The Mo’Rockin’ Sunrise Ponchette is about to become your new favorite crochet project! It can be worn in 3 different ways, a short crochet poncho, shawl, and wrap. Even the entire look can be changed based on making two of one side rather than one of each side.

I was hoping to create a half circle shaped, lacy crochet poncho but worked in rows from the center out to the wingspan with various height stitches. That didn’t exactly happen, but the current shape worked even better in not being a half circle. #HappyAccident

In order to create this ponchette (short poncho), various tall stitches will be used, such as a triple treble stitch and a few extended stitches. If you’re new to such stitches, you will get plenty of practice while making the Mo’Rockin’ Sunrise Ponchette! This combination of stitches create an even increase and decrease in the shape of each row.

When you finish each piece, you might think of the beach because they look a lot like a giant clam shell. Luckily, one of my crochet besties lives in the Arizona desert, and when she mentioned that, we looked at each other in excitement about looking at deserts. Also, I love a good play on words too, so Mo’Rockin’ instead of Moroccan was a no-brainer. And finding a picture of the Moroccan sunrise sealed the name.

Paintbox Yarns Metallic DK is a cotton blend yarn that has AMAZING drape with the blend of fibers. LoveCrafts gifted this yarn for this project, and I had just enough left to gift to one crochet friend!

This yarn is a chainette construction with sheen from the polyamide and a nice structure from the cotton. Each skein is 50 g and 131 yards. It’s light and airy that is great to work with a range of crochet hook sizes. The only drawback of the yarn is that if it catches anything, a fingernail or a fine piece on the hook end, the yarn does pull and fuzz. Definitely file your nails and make sure your hook of choice is smooth along the head and neck before working with this yarn.

NOTES

  • Pattern is written US terms.
  • Read the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Shawl is created in 9 parts: First Center, First Body, Edging, Second Center, Second Body, Edging, Connecting Pieces, Attaching Buttons, and Closing Chain.
  • The Body of each piece is created in back and forth rows that are attached to the Center half circle.
  • The sl st in the First and Second Center replaces the ch 1 for the following sc. Do not work in any of sl st made in the First or Second Center.
  • Each row that begins or ends with a sc will be attached to one st of the Center, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Each row that ends with a sl st will be attached in the same st as the previously made row.
  • It helps to attach the Second Chain to the lower button, and then use a hook to weave through stitches along the edge, and then secure at one of the top buttons.
