Pine Trees Crochet Cowl

SHARE

The Pine Trees Crochet Cowl is a fun and quick accessory pattern.

Fall is in the air! This means cooler temps and US holiday season. As a crocheter, this means gift making too.

The Pine Trees crochet Cowl is a must-make this holiday gift-making season because it requires less then one skein of yarn, and has a fun surprise (that can be skipped).

This crochet cowl idea was born out of the need for a quick crochet item that can be made within a week. A lot of us will be crocheting long hours into the night or waking early in order to make some amazing gifts for loved ones this holiday season.

You’ll love that this stitch pattern looks like little trees, especially if you add beads and a bow, like I did for a touch of Christmas.

I have to give all credit to one of my yarn besties, Stacy, for the idea to add beads to the cowl. It took some experimenting to get the look right, and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Does it get any funner than adding beads to your crochet? I had a blast adding beads to the Sand to Sea Shawl, and this one is easier and quicker.

If you choose to add beads and a bow, it only requires a few, and you can choose whatever size bead will slide over a crochet hook, if you don’t want to pre-string the beads. And the bow is super easy with just a few yards of crochet thread or a piece of scrap yarn.

If you’re not into beads, the Pine Trees crochet Cowl looks great without them and can be made in any color of yarn for anyone to wear, and quick enough to make a few in different colors to match your favorite long sleeve tops and sweaters.

Yarn

I grabbed some Lion Brand Basic Stitch Premium from my stash in Ivy because it’s the perfect shade of green that reminded me of Christmas trees.

It’s a soft, but sturdy premium acrylic yarn that comes in 15 rich colors of 219 yards per 100 g, which is enough to make a wider and taller cowl per skein.

This specific yarn is now discontinued, but Lion Brand now offers Basic Stitch Anti Pilling at $5.99 per skein. Basic Stitch Anti Pilling comes in 185 yards / 170 meters per 100 g skeins. You can choose from 55 color options that are a mix of solids, prints, moulines, reflective and tweed color ways.

Construction

I love using foundation stitches in my crochet designs and minimizing visible seams. The Pine Trees Cowl uses foundation stitches in the round, so no more sewing the gap with the tail, and uses the chainless starting double crochet to create an almost invisible seam.

I chose to work in the round for this cowl with the modified pine trees stitch, so that it would look seamless and not bulky where the two ends would be sewn together. The seamless look allows the open spaces to show up clearly so you can show off any side of the cowl.
