Flower Mandala Circle Poncho

SHARE

Don’t you just love the summer music season? Festivals around the country with artists from decades before plus new artists you didn’t know you were a fan of…. The summer music festivals often offer unique fashion, but we can always count on a bohemian vibe. The bohemian vibe was a huge inspiration to this latest design, Flower Mandala Circle Poncho.

This Flower mandala circle poncho has been swirling around in my head for some time, and I wasn’t sure wear to begin, or even what it would look like besides the flower and the surrounding lacy rows for the center.

Just like many of you, I enjoy visiting my local yarn stores and shops to see what latest squishiness is available to touch. On some random day while out running errands, I stopped at Tuesday Morning (If you don’t have one in your area, please find one) to peruse the craft section when I should never peruse a craft section, LOL. It was just my luck that I discovered Fibra Natura Naturalin, and it’s so lovely being made from cotton and linen. I bought every skein on the shelf!

Once I got home, I started searching for more colors, and learned that this particular line had been discontinued. 🙁 Before your eyes well up over the thought of not adding some to your stash, there is an alternative! Fibra Natura offers Good Earth, which is also a cotton and linen worsted weight yarn! YAY! Click the affiliate link below to grab your own skeins for this pattern, or just to add to your stash!

Although the season is changing from summer to fall in the Northern hemisphere, the Flower Mandala Circle Poncho can be worn year round when it’s not quite cool enough for a jacket, or hot enough for tank tops. And who said that bohemian looks are only for festivals? It’s a way of life and fashion!

As a short person, I wrote the pattern in mind of not having the poncho hang too long in the back, but instructions are included for additional length. I hope you love this pattern as much as I loved creating it. I can’t wait to see pictures of your Flower Mandala Circle Ponchos! If you need a hat to complete the look, check out the Terry Ann Hat or Las Olas Hat.

GAUGE

15 dc x 6 rows = 4” x 4”

It is helpful to make a gauge swatch of 20 dc and 10 rows to accurately check your gauge with the hook listed. If your swatch of 15 dc and 6 rows is less than 4 inches, then it is suggested to increase the hook size. If your swatch of 15 dc and 6 rows is more than 4 inches, then it is suggested to decrease the hook size.

NOTES

  • Pattern is written in US terms
  • Increase hook size if you chain tightly to meet gauge, and minimize the poncho becoming wavy.
  • The mandala starts with a magic circle. If you are not comfortable with magic circle, ch 5, sl st to first ch to make a circle.
  • Within the pattern, you will read st(s) and this will refer to the stitch in the row below or the chain of the row below, unless it specifies chain.
  • Take note of when to turn at the end of the row, or not to turn.
  • During the lace sections, each short stitch (sc) will be placed in a taller stitch (hdc, dc or tr), and each tall stitch (hdc, dc or tr) will be placed in a short stitch (sc).
  • It is helpful to cut ends at least 6” long, and weave in ends as you change colors by splitting the yarn and weaving in different directions to minimize a bulky chain section.
  • Any of special stitches (i.e. first-dc, first-tr) can be substituted with the appropriate number of chains to reach the height needed.
  • If you desire the poncho to be longer in the back, continue in established pattern all the way around, rather than placing the markers.
  • When you create the neck opening, it may help to complete the neckline after completing Round 16, and then fasten off the yarn to continue using the same skein of color B.
